GREEN BAY — As spring arrives, so do the seasonal allergies that can affect children and adults. With blooming flowers, budding trees and increased pollen counts, it’s essential to recognize and manage allergy symptoms that can disrupt our daily activities. Emplify Health by Bellin is dedicated to raising awareness about spring allergies and providing valuable information to help everyone navigate this challenging season.
The first step in managing allergies is recognizing the symptoms.
“Seasonal allergy symptoms can have some symptoms that are similar to that of the common cold, which can make it difficult to pinpoint what is the true cause, especially in children,” said Rachel Chastain, APNP (asthma, allergy, immunology). “With allergies, we tend to see itchy eyes and/or throat, symptoms appearing during the same time every year and lasting longer than a typical cold.”
After symptoms have been identified, it’s best to find the cause or triggers of the allergy.
“Several common allergens include pollens from trees, grasses and weeds,” added Rachel Chastain. “However, mold, dander and dust mites are culprits of allergies as well.”
Warmer temperatures and wet conditions can allow mold to thrive. Spring cleaning and decluttering can make dust mite more prevalent and trigger symptoms.
For allergy season, the following are great tips to keep in mind to manage and reduce symptoms:
Monitor pollen counts and limit outdoor activity on high-pollen days
Keep windows closed to keep pollen out of homes
Use an air purifier
Regularly clean your home
Avoid hanging laundry outside
Being proactive during allergy season can help reduce the severity of symptoms to make it a more enjoyable season for all. An allergist can help you identify allergy triggers and how to best combat your symptoms. Emplify Health by Bellin also encourages community members to speak with their primary care provider or pediatrician about their allergy concerns.
