The 10th annual Bellin Women’s Half Marathon and seventh annual 5K attracted 1,200 registrants Oct. 5, showcasing the immense power of sisterhood through these one-of-a-kind events in Northeast Wisconsin.
“We are so proud to be celebrating a full decade of women’s empowerment through this unique-to-our-region female-focused event,” said Race Director Linda Maxwell. “In that time, we’ve notched more than 8,500 total finishes, representing thousands of women who have taken steps toward a healthier lifestyle, prioritizing physical activity, doing something great for themselves and inspiring those around them.”
Individually, 527 participants registered for the 13.1-mile half marathon, while 143 formed two-person relay teams, 482 registered for the 5K race and 48 registrants participated virtually. The event also welcomed the inclusion of seven teams from myTEAM TRIUMPH, an organization that pairs challenged athletes with able-bodied individuals for an all-encompassing race experience. Alongside hundreds from Northeast Wisconsin, participants from Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois, Colorado, Iowa, North Carolina, Texas, Louisiana, Maryland, Florida and Washington added to the diversity of the event.
Race-morning temperatures hovered near 50 degrees with a light breeze at the start of the 8 a.m. event, with temps climbing to the low 70s and winds picking up significantly by the time the course closed at noon. Medical personnel reported no major participant issues during or after the race.
Dubbed “a race to empower women,” the Bellin Women’s Half Marathon was established in 2015 to commend and motivate female athletes of all levels and abilities. Additionally, it serves as a platform to highlight training and health concerns specifically affecting women, such as the distinctive challenges faced by mothers who run. In 2018, the event expanded to include a 5K, allowing even more women to participate in the pursuit of good health and wellness.
The Bellin Women’s events offer a matchless race weekend experience, commencing with the Women’s Inspiration Dinner the night before the event. Participants receive a custom medal and a top-quality long-sleeve finisher shirt. As they celebrate their accomplishments, runners and walkers relax on the CityDeck behind Hagemeister Park in downtown Green Bay, reveling in pink lemonade and indulging in chocolate and other delectable treats.
