GREEN BAY — As the sun shines brighter and temperatures rise, so do the risks for skin cancer. With millions of U.S. cases diagnosed each year, it’s crucial to learn about the importance of skin health and early detection.
Skin cancer is highly treatable with early detection, which can take place in the comfort of your own home.
“After a shower or when you are changing clothes, look over your skin for new moles or changes in existing moles,” says Dr. Matthew Andreoli, Emplify Health by Bellin Family Medicine Physician. “If you notice anything unusual, don’t hesitate to consult your primary care provider or dermatologist.”
To help individuals perform effective skin checks, Dr. Andreoli recommends the following guidelines:
Examine your entire body: Use a mirror to check all areas of your skin, including hard-to-see places like your back, scalp, and between your toes. Don’t forget to check under your nails and on the soles of your feet.
Look for the ABCDEs of melanoma: Pay attention to moles that are Asymmetrical, have irregular Borders, show multiple Colors, have a Diameter larger than a pencil eraser, or are Evolving in size, shape or color.
Keep track of changes: Take photos of your moles and skin over time. This can help you notice any changes that may occur and provide valuable information to your healthcare provider.
Parents or guardians can use these same recommendations to perform skin checks on children who can’t perform them effectively on their own.
In addition to regular skin checks, it’s important to understand the risks associated with sun exposure. “It takes about 15 minutes for unprotected skin to begin to burn in the sun,” adds Dr. Andreoli. “Even short periods of sun exposure can lead to skin damage, which is why it is important to regularly apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30, wear protective clothing and seek shade whenever possible.”
