GREEN BAY — Across the country, avid hunters are heading out or getting ready for deer hunting season. While you’re checking off your prep list, make sure a physical examination is part of it.
Emplify Health by Bellin knows hunting requires a lot of physical effort. From hiking through rough terrain to hauling heavy prey, it can take a big toll on your body. With proper precautions, you can avoid potential injuries that keep you from getting your prized trophy buck. The first step is a routine physical exam.
“Hunting is a sport, which is why we look at providing exams through the lens of an athlete,” said Jesse Krzyzanowski, physical therapist with Emplify Health by Bellin. “Before your season begins, we want to look at where you are with range of motion, flexibility and even your blood pressure and heart rate. With an evaluation, we can provide you with guidance on how to head out into the woods safely and avoid potential injuries.”
Just like a runner preparing for a race, hunters of all ages should prepare themselves physically before they head out. Krzyzanowski recommends incorporating exercises such as strength and mobility to get your muscles and your mind ready.
“Aim to start physically preparing at least 12 weeks prior to your desired season,” Krzyzanowski said. “That way you are giving your body ample time to be ready for the physical demands hunting requires.”
Your physical preparations don’t end when the season begins. Each day you go out is an opportunity to keep physical health in mind. Before you head out to your stand, remember keep these tips:
Warm up your muscles and get your blood pumping by stretching or taking a brisk walk or easy jog
Take breaks by flexing your arms and legs. Hunting requires a lot of patience and being still, which can result in clenched muscles.
Stay hydrated to avoid fatigue and dizziness.
Your physical health is important with any activity, especially hunting. Schedule a visit with your primary care provider or visit Emplify Health by Bellin Titletown Sports Medicine & Orthopedics for a free walk-in injury assessment.
“We may not be able to ensure you bring home a trophy buck, but we can help you avoid injuries this hunting season,” adds Krzyzanowski.
