GREEN BAY — It’s important for everyone to receive regular health check-ups for long and healthy lives; however, men may be less likely than their female counterparts to seek routine care. For Men’s Health Awareness Month, Emplify Health is reminding all men of the importance of regular care and screenings.
Men often face barriers that discourage them from seeking timely healthcare.
“We are still seeing men coming in who have experienced symptoms for weeks, if not months,” said Dr. Matthew Andreoli, Emplify Health by Bellin Family Medicine Physician. “There is a ‘push through the pain’ mentality that can lead to delayed visits or to only utilize Urgent Cares or Emergency Departments over scheduled visits with a primary care provider.”
Frequent visits to Urgent Care or the Emergency Department can end up being very costly. When patients establish a primary care provider (PCP) and keep regular appointments, they can save money while taking a proactive approach to their health.
“The best time to establish a primary care provider is before something happens. Eventually everyone has something – a sprained ankle, bad cold or new high blood pressure,” adds Dr. Andreoli. “It’s helpful to have a trusted provider to see when life inevitably throws a curveball. Once established, it’s important to see your provider regularly so they can stay on top of your care.”
Regularly seeing a PCP can help men identify age-specific risks and appropriate screenings. Common conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and prostate problems can be prevented and managed with a PCP.
“Your primary care provider can also be a useful resource and guide to assist with mental health issues, such as depression,” says Dr. Andreoli. “We all want to lead healthier lives. With a PCP, men can be physically and mentally healthier for longer.”
Men are encouraged to prioritize their health and establish and keep a primary care provider for a healthier future. To learn more and find a PCP near you, please visit bellin.org.
