GREEN BAY — As we start the holiday season, many of us look forward to celebrating with our loved ones. But the pressure to go to every party, buy the perfect gift or make a great meal can easily get to be too much. To help find the peace this season, Emplify Health by Bellin offers five tips to reduce stress and focus on what truly matters.
“It’s not uncommon for stress levels to rise during the holidays,” said Elizabeth Maes, Emplify Health by Bellin Behavioral Health Clinic Leader. “From scheduling and shopping to prepping and decorating, there is a lot going on. When things start to feel like too much, it’s time to reframe our thinking and focus on creating lasting memories and building meaningful connections.”
To prioritize the reason for the season, consider these helpful tips:
Don’t overbook yourself. Consider saying no to events that don’t align with your priorities.
Shift the focus from elaborate gatherings to shared experiences and connections. As a host, ask for help; as a guest, offer it!
Set a realistic budget for gifts, décor and food for yourself and others. And stick to it.
Give yourself permission to tweak traditions to create less stress and more joy.
Prioritize self-care by getting enough sleep, eating well, exercising and putting your physical and mental health first.
BONUS tip: remember that help is available if you feel overwhelmed. Don't be afraid to turn to friends, family or community resources for help.
“It’s easy to get ‘wrapped up’ in the holiday hustle and bustle,” added Maes. “We can all do our part to reduce the stress on ourselves and others to make it a joyful season for all.”
