GREEN BAY — With fall in full swing and winter on the horizon, many outdoor enthusiasts are gearing up for activities such as hunting, ice fishing and camping. While enjoying these activities, it’s crucial to be aware of certain risks such as carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, particularly when using portable heaters, gas stoves and generators in small, confined spaces.
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be produced by common appliances and outdoor equipment. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 400 people die from unintentional CO poisoning each year in the United States with around 20,000 visiting emergency departments annually. Children, the elderly and individuals with chronic health conditions are at a higher risk for severe outcomes from CO exposure.
“Carbon monoxide is a silent threat that can have devastating consequences,” says Emplify Health by Bellin Emergency Physician Dr. Brad Burmeister. “When engaging in outdoor activities, we recommend bringing a carbon monoxide detector with you, especially if you’re staying in small spaces, such as an ice shack or small cabin, and are using gas-powered equipment. This simple device can save lives by alerting you to dangerous levels of CO.”
Symptoms of CO poisoning can be mistaken for other illnesses and include headaches, dizziness and nausea. Knowing the symptoms and using these helpful tips can protect you and loved ones:
Check appliances and equipment before use – including at home furnaces or space heaters
Keep generators and other fuel-powered equipment at least 20 feet away from windows, doors and vents
Never use generators or grills inside enclosed spaces
Have carbon monoxide detectors on hand, especially in tents, RVs, shacks or cabins
If you experience symptoms of CO poisoning, get fresh air right away and seek emergency medical care
“Fall and winter outdoor activities are a great way to bond with family and loved ones,” added Dr. Burmeister. “Keeping everyone safe from dangers like CO poisoning will ensure we can truly enjoy our time in the outdoors.”
