GREEN BAY — As Memorial Day weekend and summer travel season approach, Emplify Health by Bellin providers are urging travelers to prioritize safety. One factor many don’t consider is the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. This colorless, odorless gas can be produced by common household appliances, vehicles and even outdoor equipment. It poses a significant risk, especially in enclosed spaces, making it essential for travelers to take precautions.
“Carbon monoxide is a silent threat that can have devastating consequences,” says Emplify Health by Bellin Emergency Physician Dr. Brad Burmeister. “When traveling, it’s a good idea to consider bringing a carbon monoxide detector with you, especially if you’re staying in older accommodations or using gas-powered equipment. This simple device can save lives by alerting you to dangerous levels of CO.”
While many people now have CO detectors in their homes, that may not be the case at rented homes, hotels or in recreational vehicles (RVs). Carbon monoxide poisoning can occur inside and even during outdoor activities. Symptoms of CO poisoning can be mistaken for other illnesses and include headaches, dizziness and nausea, making it vital to have a detector on hand.
What to know about Carbon monoxide:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports more than 400 people die from unintentional CO poisoning each year in the United States.
CDC also reports that around 20,000 people visit the emergency department due to CO poisoning annually.
Children, the elderly and individuals with chronic health conditions are at a higher risk for severe outcomes form CO exposure.
Whether you are camping out in an RV, staying at a hotel or rental property, it’s important to be proactive in Carbon Monoxide safety.
“Taking simple steps such as bringing a detector, checking appliances and understanding the symptoms,” Burmeister said, “you can protect yourself and loved ones while enjoying your travels.”
