The "HER" (Health Empowerment Resilience) Program is dedicated to fostering positive body image, mindfulness and healthy eating habits among adolescent girls in the Oconto School District. The program's first cohort, which ran from October 2023 to February 2024, saw enthusiastic participation from a mix of middle and high school-aged girls. Promoted on Facebook, the program received an overwhelming response with eighteen nominations in just two days of well-deserving girls for the program.

Ultimately, eight girls were selected based on their availability and commitment. Each week, the girls engaged in activities that included nutrition education with corresponding snacks, workouts and mindfulness sessions led by Lori Eklund Walsh, a counselor from Bellin Health. Lori's involvement was a highlight, as the girls enjoyed her mindfulness and meditation activities.
Following the success of the first cohort, a counselor from Oconto High School became involved and the program expanded to Oconto High School, where a second cohort was held during the school day at Oconto High School to improve attendance.
This six-week program, which was run on Tuesdays and Thursdays, included thirteen girls and focused on stress management techniques and positive body image. The girls also participated in the 2024 Marinette 5K Heart Run/Walk. The program continued with a summer school cohort for younger girls, incorporating creative activities like making calming jars and glitter slime to encourage open discussions.
The HER Program continues its programming for the 2024-25 school year at Oconto High School every Tuesday and Thursday. Thanks to Attorney Tom Awen, Oconto High School class of 1981, the HER Program's success has paved the way for the "HIS" (Health Individuality and Strength) Program, set to launch in 2025, which will focus on the health and well-being of adolescent boys in Oconto.
