Bellin Health on Thursday dedicated a new donated sculpture paying tribute to Dr. Mark Reinke, a beloved Bellin Health surgeon who passed away in 2013. A work by De Pere artist David Windey, “Healing Hands” is located at the Bellin Health Surgery & Specialty Center, 933 Waube Lane.
“Healing Hands” is inspired by the hands of a surgeon and is a portrayal of the idea that there is healing in the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of care. It was donated by Joe and Kathy Reinke Nemmers as a way to honor Kathy’s late husband and beloved Bellin physician Dr. Mark Reinke. The donation was made through The Bellin Health Foundation and no health system funds were used in creating or placing the sculpture. Artist Windey worked for more than 1,500 hours to create “Healing Hands,” which stands 15 feet tall and weighs about 1,800 pounds. The hands themselves are each 10 feet tall and weigh about 300 pounds.
“This beautiful gift is a fitting tribute to a physician who gave so much of himself to the patients he served — body, mind and spirit,” said Jen Macdonald, Senior Vice President, Specialty Service Lines and the Executive Sponsor of the SSC. “The carefully sculpted hands represent not only the incredible skill of a surgeon, but also the tender care that goes into serving our patients. This generously donated sculpture is a perfect fit for our Surgery and Specialty Center grounds.”
