Continues record of success among 482 MSSP organizations
Bellin Health Partners’ Accountable Care Organization (ACO) was second among 482 organizations nationwide in quality and experience in 2022, according to Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP) results.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced the results, which evaluate ACOs across a variety of metrics. Bellin’s patients achieved this high-level quality and experience while spending 8.3 percent less that what Medicare expected for this population.
CMS describes MSSP ACOs as “groups of doctors, hospitals, and other health care providers who collaborate to give coordinated high-quality care to people with Medicare, focusing on delivering the right care at the right time, while avoiding unnecessary services and medical errors.” Bellin joined the MSSP in 2022, continuing a long and successful history of ACO participation. Bellin’s ACO involvement began in 2012 when it was part of the Pioneer ACO with ThedaCare, and continued with the Next Generation ACO beginning in 2016. Bellin frequently came in among the highest quality and lowest cost organizations in the program — and often was first in both categories.
“For more than a decade, Bellin Health Partners has worked within the ACO framework to better coordinate care for the patients we serve,” said Naomi Wedin, Bellin Health Partners Executive Director. “We continue to work tirelessly to improve cost and quality for our ACO patients while looking for ways to apply these principles to our patient population at large.”
More than 10.4 million individuals are part of the 482 MSSP ACOs nationwide. About 13,000 of those are part of Bellin’s ACO. If all individuals in the program came in at Bellin’s average spend rate, it would have saved CMS more than $18 billion.
“With MSSP, we are continuing our journey to better coordinate and truly care for our community, not just helping people when they’re sick but working to proactively improve health through prevention and healthy living,” said Christopher Elfner, Bellin Health Vice President of Accountable Care Strategy. “Those efforts are reflected in our cost, quality and experience metrics — but the most important takeaway is how we’re able to better coordinate care for the patients we serve”
