Volunteer Requirements
Our volunteer opportunities are available to those age 16+. On this page you will learn the necessary steps you need to take to become a patient-facing Bellin Health volunteer at any of our hospitals or clinics, required vaccinations and testing and about the orientation process.
The student program is made up of three terms:
- Spring term: January – April
- Summer term: May – August
- Fall term: September – December
Student applications must be submitted by the following dates:
- Spring term: December 1
- Summer term: April 1
- Fall term: August 1
To ensure the best experience for our patients, volunteers and staff, we have established the following requirements for students:
- You must consider school, work and activity schedules to ensure you are able to commit to a minimum of one volunteer shift each week, for a minimum of 12 weeks.
- Space is limited, and placement is based on department needs and applicant skills, interest, experience and availability. Students will be accepted based on the number of volunteer opportunities available.
- Our patients and staff depend on you. If you have two no-call, no-show incidents or unexcused absences, you will be removed from the volunteer program.
- Volunteers who successfully complete a full term will receive priority placement when returning for additional terms. Students must inform Volunteer Services staff of their intention to return.
- Students aged 16-17 will require parental consent to volunteer.
For volunteers age 18+, you must have proof of two MMR doses. For those age 16-17, proof of one MMR vaccination is required.
Influenza vaccinations are optional, but we highly encourage everyone to receive their annual vaccine.
You will need to fill out and submit with your application both a parental consent form and personal reference form.
Tuberculosis (TB) Testing
You will need to have a blood draw TB (QuantiFERON) test performed if you have not had one in the last year. If the test comes back positive, you will need to make an appointment with your healthcare provider so they can attest that you do not show any signs or symptoms. Then, we require you to sign a waiver showing your understanding of the signs and symptoms and that you have tested positive.
Orientation Process
After you have submitted your application, our team will contact you to coordinate your background check, medical release form, schedule and more. You will also receive an orientation manual and on-the-job training. Please contact our team if you have questions at any point in the process.
