Green Bay - In recent years, environmental changes have made allergy season longer and more intense across the country. That means additional overlap with peak respiratory illness season - and additional confusion around the question: am I sick, or is it allergies?
In the Midwest, allergy season typically kicks off in early spring and can persist well into the fall. With our occasional warm days, Emplify Health by Bellin allergy and immunology physician, Dr. Lakshmi Nair have noticed people with allergies are already feeling the effects.
How do you tell the difference between "I need an antihistamine" and "I need to see a doctor"?
Signs it's probably allergies:
- Itchy, watery eyes
- Clear, thin nasal discharge
- No fever
- Symptoms persist for weeks and appear around the same time each year
Signs it might be a respiratory illness:
- Fever and body aches
- Thick, colored mucus
- Fatigue and weakness
- Sudden onset
- Symptoms worsen over days
"When you begin to notice overlapping symptoms or are simply uncertain of what's truly causing your discomfort, reach out to your healthcare provider," adds Dr. Nair. "We can help you properly identify your symptoms, search for a root cause and provide a tailored treatment plan."
