GREEN BAY — It’s the prime time of year for backyard cookouts, neighborhood gatherings and lighting up the sky with fireworks. While the booms and sparkles bring smiles to faces, Emplify Health reminds community members that fireworks aren’t toys and can cause series, life-altering injuries if not taken seriously.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 14,700 people sought emergency room treatment for firework-related injuries in 2024 – a dramatic jump from 9,700 the year before. And, those injuries don’t just happen to adults. About 28 percent of firework related injuries affect children under 17.
“Fireworks may look festive, but they can cause life-changing burns, hand trauma and various other injuries in seconds,” said Emplify Health emergency physician, Dr. Brad Burmeister. “Injuries from fireworks can happen instantly and without warning if you are not handling them properly. That’s why we highly recommend leaving fireworks to trained professionals.”
Burns and hand injuries aren’t the only types of fireworks injuries. Eye injuries due to fireworks are becoming more common each year. Injuries to the eyes from fireworks can result in detached retina, ruptured eyeball, scratched cornea and burns.
“Not only can fireworks cause severe damage to your body, but they can also quickly take away your sight,” added Dr. Burmeister. “They may be entertaining and thrilling, but they can easily have life-changing consequences.”
To avoid firework injuries to yourself or loved ones, consider these tips:
- Attend a licensed, professional fireworks display. This is the single best way to enjoy the spectacle without putting yourself or family at risk.
- Keep a safe distance. Even as a spectator, maintain plenty of space from any fireworks activity.
- Skip consumer fireworks at home. No backyard show is worth a trip to the emergency room or visit from the fire department.
- Keep fireworks, including sparklers, away from children. Choose glow sticks instead for the little ones.
- Know what to do in an emergency. Don't wait to find help if a firework injury occurs. Seek help immediately.
