Bellin Earns Leapfrog Group Top Hospitals Award

Exclusive accolade based on survey measuring quality, patient safety

Bellin Hospital is one of just 98 hospitals nationwide to be named to The Leapfrog Group’s annual Top Hospitals list for 2015.

The selection is based on the results of the organization’s annual hospital survey, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, focusing on three critical areas of hospital care: how patients fare, resource use and management structures used to prevent errors.

Approximately 1,600 hospitals nationwide completed this year’s survey, said Anne Hale, Bellin Health director of System Quality. Bellin was the only Wisconsin hospital in the Top Urban Hospitals category, which contained 62 of the 98 top hospitals on the list.

“Bellin’s inclusion with the big healthcare systems in the urban category says a lot about the dedication our providers, staff and leaders have to making Bellin a safe place to receive care,” Hale said. “When we receive recognition like this, it shows our results are paying off. To be nationally recognized is a tribute to everyone who works at Bellin.”

Bellin also made the Top Hospitals list in 2012. The accolade was established in 2006.

“Leapfrog’s Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most prestigious distinctions any hospital can achieve in the United States,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Top Hospitals have lower infection rates, better outcomes, decreased length of stay and fewer readmissions. By achieving Top Hospital status, Bellin has proven it prioritizes the safety of its patients, is committed to transparency and provides exemplary care for families and patients in Northeastern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I congratulate the board, staff, and clinicians of Bellin Hospital whose efforts achieved these results.”

The Leapfrog survey is a strenuous instrument that helps Bellin continually improve what it does, Hale said.

“We don’t take the survey to gain national recognition — we take it to learn and improve,” she said. “The national recognition is a byproduct of our hard work.”
